PURPOSE: To obtain the coating liquid useful as an insulating film for a liquid crystal display element without adversely affecting its display performance by dissolving a specific hydrolyzate, aluminum salt and precipitation preventive agent into an org. solvent. CONSTITUTION: This coating liquid is constituted by dissolving the hydrolyzate of the tetralkoxysilane expressed by formula I and the trialkoxysilane expressed by formula II as well as the aluminum salt and the precipitation preventive agent into an org. solvent. In the formulas I, II, R denotes 1 to 5C alkyl group; R1 denotes an alkyl group, alkenyl group, or aryl group; R2 denotes 1 to 5C alkyl group, respectively. More preferably, the coating liquid is so constituted that the tetralkoxysilane is incorporated at 0.1 to 2.0 times the molar ratio of the trialkoxysilane, the aluminum salt at 0.1 to 1.0 times the molar ratio of the alkoxysilane and the precipitation preventive agent at >=1 times the weight of Al2O3 in terms of Al2O3.
