PURPOSE: An in plane switching mode LCD makes a common electrode and a data electrode of transparent metal to improve the aperture ratio, and applies the electric field perfectly parallel to the surface of a substrate with the common electrode and the data electrode on the same plane to improve the viewing angle. CONSTITUTION: In case a common electrode(209) and a data electrode(208) composed of ITO are formed on a gate insulator(212), the common electrode(209) is connected to a common wiring through a hole formed on a passivation layer(220) and the data electrode(208) is connected to a source/drain electrodes(206) of the TFT through a hole formed on the passivation layer(220). The passivation layer(220) is composed of an inorganic matter such as SiNx and SiOx, or organic matter such as BCB. Because the transparent data electrode(208) and common electrode(209) are formed on the same plane, the electric field perfectly parallel to the surface of a substrate(210) is applied to a liquid crystal layer(230).
