Apparatus has a main scale with a longitudinal measurement scale, a sliding element movable relative to main scale, a reading head attached to the sliding element and evaluation circuit for determining the absolute displacement of sliding element wrt. the main scale. Read head has several write (28) and read lines (29). Electrical pulses in write lines produce pulses in all read lines dependent on instantaneous position of sliding element relative to measurement scale. The read lines are each connected to a switch (32) that changes between two states depending on the generated pulses. An Independent claim is also included for an application of the measurement arrangement in gauges with rod-shaped scales, dial gauges, etc.
