FAULT CONDITIONS AFFECTING HIGH SPEED DATA SERVICES

A portion of POTS system (10) has system (11) for detecting faults in subscriber lines (12-14). The subscriber lines connect subscriber units (16- 18), i.e., modems and/or telephones, to a telephones switch (15). The telephone switch connects the subscriber lines to the remainder of the telephone network. Each subscriber line consists of a standard twisted two- wire (T)(R) telephone line adapted to voice transmissions. The telephone cables (22) include a plurality of subscriber lines. A measurement unit (40) includes devices (41) and (43) for performing electrical measurements in ord er to detect line faults. The devices are connected to the switch through a tes t bus (42) and standard voice test access (44). A computer (46) selects types of measurements performed. The computer sends control signals to the measuremen t unit via a connection (48). The computer comprises monitor (47), readable storage medium (50) and data storage device (49).
