SIGHT GLASS

Sight glass (10) for providing a visual indication of the presence of a gas in a liquid refrigerant includes a main body (12) defining a cavity (14) and having an inlet (16) and an outlet (18) to allow the refrigerant liquid to flow through the cavity (14). A divider (20) divides the cavity (14) into a main flow chamber (22) and an inspection chamber (24). The divider includes a first hole (26) to allow a sample of liquid flowing through the main flow chamber (22) to flow into the inspection chamber (24) and a second hole (28) for allowing reentry of the sample into the main flow chamber (22). The divider (20) acts to ensure that the sample of liquid refrigerant reentering the main flow chamber (22) does so at a reduced flow rate. Window (30) is supported on the main body (12) to allow visual inspection of the inspection chamber (24). Gases dissolved or entrained in the liquid refrigerant accumulate in the inspection chamber (24) due to the reduced flow rate and can be viewed through window (30).
