The invention relates to a method for treating fibers which exclusively or entirely contain polyolefines or polyester in order to render them hydrophilic. According to the inventive method, (a) mainly polyolefines or polyester and (b) 0.01 to 10 wt.-% based on the sum of polyolefine or polyester of a composition containing at least one compound from the group of heterocycles are subjected to temperatures ranging from 180 to 320 DEG C in a conventional manner to a shaping treatment to give fibers. According to said method, (i) no transition metal compounds are added to the mixture that is subjected to the shaping treatment, either before or during said shaping treatment, (ii) the heterocycles (b) are selected from the group of oxazolines of general formula (I), wherein R<1> is a saturated or unsaturated alkyl radical having 7 to 21 C atoms and R<2> and R<3> are independently hydrogen or a methyl radical, and the group of the imidazolines of general formula (II), wherein R<4> is a saturated or unsaturated alkyl radical having 7 to 21 C atoms and R<5> is hydrogen or a group CH3, C2H5, CH2-CH2-NH2 or CH2-CH2-OH and (iii) the heterocycles (b) require at least four cycles in the individual wettability test until they lose their effectiveness.
