In a process for preparing unsaturated aliphatic nitriles, olefines, ammonia and air and/or oxygen are reacted at elevated temperature, e.g.480 DEG C., in the presence of a catalyst containing SiO2 as carriers, and an active constituent corresponding to the formula (M)aBib-MocOd in which M = Ca and/or Sr, a = 0.3 to 0.75 c, b = 0.1 to 0.66 c and d = 2.95 to 4.75 c with the proviso that a + b must lie between 0.55 and 1.1 c. In example 1 a stream of propylene, ammonia, steam and air in a volume ratio of 1 : 1 : 1 : 8 yielded 60% acrylonitrile. Higher conversions are given in Examples 3 and 4. Reaction may be effected in fixed or fluidized beds.ALSO:In the manufacture of oxidation catalysts a homogeneous acid solution is prepared from Ca and/or Sr salts, Bi salts, (NH4)6 Mo7 O24, (the quantities providing 0,3 to 0,75 gm. atoms of Sr and/or Ca and 0,1 to 0,66 gm. atoms of Bi per gm. atom of Mo), colloidal H2SiO3 and a mineral acid which does not form an acid-insoluble precipitate with Ca or Sr, in the absence of H3 Po3, or Po4111, and this solution is dried and calcined. The preferred mineral acid is HNo3. The catalyst may be coated on to cores of aluminium silicate, corundum, quartz, feldspar, granite, sintered magnesite, or SiC. The catalyst may be used in a fixed or fluidized bed. |
