<p>A process of electrodialysis of aqueous fluids to transfer dissolved salts from a waste or other solution identified as a diluate solution into a concentrate solution is provided. An electrodialysis unit (10) includes a stack of semipermeable, ion selective membranes (12A, 12C) and includes an applied electric field causing ions to pass from the diluate solution to the concentrate solution through the ion selective membranes. The electrodialysis unit (10) defines at least one diluate solution compartment and at least one concentrate solution compartment. The diluate solution compartment and the concentrate solution compartment are separated by alternating cation-selective (12C) and anion-selective (12A) membranes. Each concentrate solution compartment is pressurized to create a pressure differential between the concentrate solution compartment and the diluate solution compartment. Pressurizing the concentrate solution compartment reduces the transport of water across said alternating cation-selective (12C) and anion-selective (12A) membranes separating the concentrate solution compartment and the diluate solution compartment. An applied differential pressure in a range between 0.25 atm. and 1 atm. is created between the concentrate solution compartment and the diluate solution compartment.</p> |
