An alarm system is provided for detecting unauthorized movement of a portable computer. The alarm system comprises a receiver unit (10) the casing (14.1) of which contains a radio frequency receiver (26), a rolling key decoder circuit (28), a movement sensing switch (30) and a microprocessor (32). An audible alarm (34) is also provided. The unit (10) is fixed to the computer's housing. A remote radio frequency transmitter unit is provided for switching the unit (10) between its various modes.
