A roll of paper 215, having a wrapper wound round it but protruding at either end 217, Fig. 2 (not shown), is supplied to automatically adjusted crimper blocks 225 which are rotatable to crimp the ends 217. As the roll 215 is fed over the first of a pair of rollers 205, 206 the operator presses a switch operating a pneumatic circuit to raise a roller 212 against which the roll comes to rest. Each of the blocks 225 is moved pneumatically towards the ends of the roll 215 on actuation of a second switch, the blocks being attached to flanges 224 of sleeves 221, Fig. 1 (not shown), slidably mounted on each end of the roller 206. Sensing members 247, Fig. 2 (not shown), each carrying a switch, touch the roll ends thereby arresting the blocks 225 independently. A third control switch is used to lower the roller 212, allowing the roll 215 to come to rest between the rollers 205, 206 which are rotated with the blocks 225 on the operation of a fourth switch. After crimping, the blocks are withdrawn, the drive to the rollers 205, 206, broken, and the roil ejected. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 961,790.
