The high rate telecommunications switching mechanism has an autonomous centre with access units (12-14) each primary ring (15) and multiplexers (16-18) connected. There is a multiplexer command (10). The multiplexer command has a signal reception mechanism (38) receiving signalling (9) connected to the subscriber telephone (1). The reception mechanism produces routing signals (24) which are applied to the primary multiplexers establishing connection with the subscriber equipment.
