PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a small size carriage moving type printing apparatus capable of printing a multi-pass image of a high resolution without forming an excessive margin on the paper rear end part. SOLUTION: A printing head unit 31 moves reciprocally in the direction perpendicular to the paper surface according to a moving guide hole 75 so as to form an image (hatched portion of the rectangular diagram) on a paper 73 by two times of multi-pass printing in one main scanning width shown by a rectangular diagram provided below. In starting the print, vacant data are printed by the first nozzle to the (n/2)th nozzle, and actual printing data are printed by the (n/2+1)th nozzle to the last nth nozzle. From the next step on, while conveying a paper by P.(n-1)/2 (nozzle interval as P) by a feeding and conveying roller pair 74, print of the actual printing data by the first nozzle to the nth nozzle is repeated. Finally, the paper 73 is conveyed only by P/2. After printing vacant data by the first nozzle to the (n/2)th nozzle and the actual printing data by the (n/2+1)th nozzle to the last nozzle, the printing operation is finished. The paper has the rear end margin only by the distance K.
