PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To determine a machine number pattern without deteriorating the image quality under draft mode by increasing the total quantity of coloring matter being imparted for forming a specified image pattern to be superposed under draft mode as compared with a case where the image pattern is to be formed without being decimated. SOLUTION: When a record information signal 28 is in draft mode, a machine number generating circuit 24 delivers a machine number pattern applicable under draft mode to several machine number pattern selection circuit 25. The circuit 25 selects a machine number pattern suitable for the type of recording medium and delivers it to an adder circuit 26. In case of draft mode, a machine number pattern wider than that for ordinary mode is employed, for example. The circuit 26 adds the machine number pattern data to an image data of the color for recording the machine number pattern among quantized image data and delivers the sum to a decimation circuit 27.
