PURPOSE: A charge coupled device is provided to differentiate a potential variation by a clock signal applied to gates to increase a charge transfer efficiency by making the thickness of an insulating layer formed on a horizontal charge transfer region be multi-layers. CONSTITUTION: A charge coupled device includes a plurality of photodiode regions(30) arranged in a matrix shape, for transforming signals relating to light into electrical signals. Vertical charge transfer regions(31) transfer image charges transformed in the photodiode regions(30) in a vertical direction. Horizontal charge transfer regions(32) transfer image the image charges transferred in a vertical direction by the vertical charge transfer regions(31) in a horizontal direction. A floating diffusion region senses the charges transferred to a final end of the horizontal charge transfer regions(32) and then outputs the results to peripheral circuits.
