Apparatus for cutting filter rod material comprises a rotatable fluted rod carrier made up of a plurality of discs spaced apart to define spaces through which a cutting knife can act, and a knife carrying shaft arranged parallel to the axis of the rod carrier and having means to set the knife in a variety of selected positions on the shaft comporting to the spaces between the discs. The apparatus comprises a hopper 1 having parallel opposed walls 2 and 3 spaced apart by a distance slightly greater than the length of multiple length rods to be contained in the hopper. The multiple length rods are fed to the flutes 10 of a carrier 9 by a vibratory device 4 and fluted roller 8 and are conveyed past knives 12 on shafts 13, 14 for cutting into single length rods. In order to cut different sizes of single length rods from different sizes of multiple length rods the wall 3 may be positioned at different distances from the wall 2 by means of selected packing pieces 18 placed around screws 16 which secure the wall 3 to a fixed bracket 17. The carrier 9 is made up of fluted discs 19 of selected widths, washers 22 which form spaces 15 between the discs with which the knives 12 co-operate, and packing collars 25. The discs are held in position by screws 23 which pass therethrough and through the collars 25 into a flange 24 of a sleeve 20 which is keyed to a rotatable shaft 21. The knife shafts 13, 14, are mounted in bearings 28 in a housing 29 and are provided with flat faces 26. Each disc knife is carried in a support 27 having a hole shaped to correspond to the shape of the shaft so that each knife is slidable along the shaft. The knives are positioned along the shafts by means of sleeves 31 of selected sizes. By selection of suitable sizes of packing pieces 18, discs 19 and collars 25, and sleeves 31 various sizes of single length rods may be cut from various or similar sizes of multiple length rods.</p> |
