PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact distance measuring apparatus which is mounted on a vehicle and scarcely affected by thermal mechanical external influence. SOLUTION: The inside of a box type holder 150 is divided into a light transmitting space 112 and a light receiving space 113 by a bulkhead 153. A light source 103 is fixed on a rear wall of the light transmitting space 112. A light transmitting optical system for transmitting a luminous flux outputted from a light source element 103 as far as a distance measuring object in a monitoring region is arranged in a light transmitting aperture formed on a front wall 151 of the light transmitting space 112. A light receiving optical system which takes a luminous flux reflected from the distance measuring object in the light receiving space 113 is arranged in a light receiving aperture formed on a front wall 151 of the light receiving space 113. A light receiving element 105 for detecting the received luminous flux taken in the light receiving space 113 is fixed on a rear wall 152 of the light receiving space 113. In the equipment constituted in this manner, a distance as far as the distance measuring object is measured, on the basis of the traveling time of a luminous flux between the light source element 103, the distance measuring object and the light receiving element 105.
