Oxygen-scavenging composition comprises a carrier containing a metal-loaded cation exchange material (CEM), in which the loaded metal has been reduced to a zero valence state. Also claimed are: (1) a composition comprising /- 1 polymeric material dispersed in a liquid medium and /- 0.1 wt. parts/100 wt. parts of elastomer materials of a metal-loaded CEM as above, and (2) a container having an interior cavity suitable for containing an oxygen-sensitive material, which has, as part of the container and exposed to its interior, a solid oxygen scavenging composition comprising a carrier containing a metal-loaded CEM as above.
