An electric power steering system for vehicles of the kind is disclosed in which torque from an electric motor drives a steering column through a gearbox, in operation, electric signals passed to a control unit from a torque sensor mounted on the steering column are used to control the drive of the electric motor. The gearbox comprises meshing members (1, 2), and the members are resiliently biased into engagement with each other to remove backlash for at least the lower end of the operating torque range.
