The air is drawn off through suction openings under subpressure within the region covered by each glass pane. The pressure prevailing between the glass pane and the mold surface is also adjusted in the region of the air introduced to just as high a pressure on either side of the glass pane. Process for bending glass panes comprises pressing the glass panes to a flat bending mold with the aid of a pressure drop produced between the mold surface and the glass pane surface facing it. The pressure drop is greatest on the edge of the glass pane and decreases to the center, whilst air is introduced via ventilation openings protruding into the mold surface. The air is drawn off through suction openings under subpressure within the region covered by each glass pane. The pressure prevailing between the glass pane and the mold surface is also adjusted in the region of the air introduced to just as high a pressure on either side of the glass pane. An Independent claim is also included for an apparatus for bending glass panes comprising a flat bending mold (1) and ventilation openings (8) to reduce the contact forces acting on the glass pane surfaces producing a drop in pressure. The mold surface (2) has a first region (V) to produce a drop in pressure and a second region (E) in the center of the mold surface located at a distance from the outer edge.
