A winding machine (10) feeds (L) a web of paper (12) or carton onto a cylinder (14,14') via a supporting drum (20), separated from each other by a winding gap (22). Prior to changing the drum, the web is transverse perforated (48) in the direction of feed by a punch (44), and then separated. The perforation device operates against a counter-unit (50). The two parts can move with respect to each other.
