By using a fatty acid desaturase gene localized in chloroplast, a transgenic plant line wherein the expression of this gene is artificially depressed by gene silencing is constructed. In this line, triene fatty acids in biomembrane lipids are largely reduced. In particular, triene fatty acids in chloroplast membrane lipids are decreased to an extremely low level. Although these plants show no difference in growth from wild strains at the usual growth temperature, they show significantly improved ability to adapt to high temperatures under high temperature conditions. |
