This invention provides a method of inducing cellular cytotoxicity of a tumor cell and treating a subject with cancer with a replication-deficient adenovirus type 5 expression vector which comprises an adenovirus genome having a deletion in the E1 and E3 region of the genome and an insertion within the region of a nucleic acid encoding a beta -lactamase under the control of a Rous Sarcoma Virus promoter.
