The fuel injection control has a combustion mode switching section for switching between fuel injection during the suction stroke and fuel injection during the compression stroke, a fuel cut-out section for interrupting the fuel feed to the fuel injection valve (5) during vehicle retardation and a delay section for delaying the restoration of the fuel feed to the fuel injection valve, e.g. for a number of timed fuel injection points, when the vehicle is re-accelerated. An Independent claim for a fuel injection control method for a direct fuel injection i.c. engine is also included.
