PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high-performance release agent comprising a polyvinyl carbamate or alkyl urea derivative as a main agent, which allows little gelation of a solution, even at an ordinary temperature or lower, even when the concentration of the main agent is increased, and therefore allows application to substrate films at room temperatures. SOLUTION: This release agent comprises a solution wherein a main agent (A) comprising a reaction product of a polymer (A1) chosen from vinyl alcohol polymers and polyethylene imines and a long-chain alkyl isocyanate (A2) is dissolved in an organic solvent (B). Here, a mixed solvent comprising a hydrocarbon solvent (B1) and ethanol and/or n-propanol (B2) in a weight ratio of from 97:3 to 80:20, is used as the organic solvent (B).
