PURPOSE: An air conditioner and a controlling method thereof are provided to use in an area of frequent occurrence of power failure and to prevent needless use of electric power by stopping the operation in case of absence of a user. CONSTITUTION: An air conditioner contains a human body sensor, a timer, and a relay coil. A method for controlling the air conditioner is composed of a step(S3) for judging a power breakage while driving a fan motor and a compressor, a step(S5) for judging the finish of the power breakage, a step(S6) for judging the pass of time after the finish of the power failure, a step(S7) for outputting a switching signal to a relay coil for switching on a main switch unit in case of a certain time passed, a step(S11) for judging the existence of a person in a room while not air conditioning the room after a certain time, and a step(S12) for stopping the compressor and the fan motor in an absence of the person.
