PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for efficiently producing a carbonic ester without the need of using highly toxic carbon monoxide and without such a limitation of equilibrium as the case of transesterification. SOLUTION: This method comprises oxidation of an acetal compound of the formula: R1O-CH2-OR2 (R1 and R2 are each a 1-10C straight-chain, branched or cyclic alkyl) with oxygen in the presence of an N-hydroxydicarboxylic acid imide compound.
