PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent an erroneous jam detection and the like due to a difference between characteristics of sheets by variably setting a waiting time until occurrence of an abnormal condition in a sheet conveying passage according to a characteristic of a sheet and determining occurrence of an abnormal condition in the sheet conveying passage when a measured time exceeds the waiting time. SOLUTION: Time counting is started by using a time counting counter (S1007), and if passage of a sheet tip is detected by means of a paper ejection sensor via a flag (YES in S1009) before a lapse of a time set in S1004-S1006 (NO in S1008), it is determined that no jam is caused and processing for a printing action is carried out. If passage of the sheet tip cannot be detected by means of the paper ejection sensor via the flag even after a lapse of the time set in S1004-S1006, that is, in case of overtime (YES in S1008), it is determined that a tip delay jam is detected by means of the paper ejection sensor, and then, an emergency stop of a printing action and occurrence of the jam are informed to a controller for a printer.
