PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a composition and a method for reducing afterglow of an yttrium tantalate X-ray phosphor having a single crystal M' structure. SOLUTION: Addition of a molybdenum or vanadium additive to a phosphor reduces afterglow. A method for adding the molybdenum or vanadium additive comprises addition of a molybdenum- or vanadium-containing compound to a mixture of raw materials compounded for forming a phosphor, and burning of the mixture at a temperature and for a period of time enough for forming a phosphor.
