PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a low toxic detergent excellent in degreasing ability of oils and fats such as machine oils, greases, waxes and the like and fluxes by employing a cyclopentanone-based compound as an effective ingredient. SOLUTION: The objective detergent contains as an effective ingredient a cyclopentanone-based compound represented by the formula (wherein R is H or a hydrocarbon group, and is preferably H, 1-6C linear or branched alkyl, or cycloalkyl). The cyclopentanone-based compound can be used solely or in combination of two or more, and can also be used as a mixture with another solvent, e.g. alcohols. Matters to be cleaned are contacted with this detergent and subsequently subjected to rinsing cleaning with a rinsing detergent and/or steam cleaning with a steam detergent to get substantially free of a residual detergent on the surface of the matter after cleaning. The preferable rinsing- and steam-detergent is, for example, 1,1,2,2,3,3,4-heptafluorocyclopentane.
