PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a catalyst capable of efficiently hydrogenating a hydrocarbon oil and provide a method for hydrogenating a hydrocarbon oil using the catalyst. SOLUTION: This catalyst comprises alumina and group VIII metals and group VIB metals of the periodic table and phosphorus deposited on the alumina. In this case, the catalyst has a specific surface area of 280 m2/g or higher, the fine pore diameter of 50Åor longer, and fine pore volume of 0.5 cc/g or higher and a method for hydrogenating a hydrocarbon oil using the catalyst is provided and a desulfurized light oil can be obtained by hydrogenation using the catalyst.
