PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject protecting agent capable of manifesting protecting actions on vascular pericytes and useful for the prophylaxis and treatment of diabetic microangiopathy such as diabetic retinopathy, diabetic neuropathy or diabetic nephropathy by including a prostanoic acid derivative as an active ingredient. SOLUTION: This protecting agent is obtained by including a prostanoic acid derivative, preferably a prostaglandin I2 derivative, especially a 4,8-inter-m- phenyleneprostaglandin I2 derivative represented by the formula [R1 is COOR2 (R2 is H, a cation, a 1-12C straight-chain alkyl or the like), CH2OH or the like; Y is H, a 1-4C alkyl, chlorine, bromine or the like; B is represented by the formula X-C(R11)(R12)OR13 (R11 is H or a 1-4C alkyl; R12 is a 1-12C straight- chain alkyl or the like; R13 is H, a 1-14C aryl or the like); E is H or OR18 (R18 is a 1-12C acyl or the like)] as an active ingredient.
