PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve operability by placing function keys that are used most frequently from among the function keys of the terminal at a lower right position with respect to a center of a multifunction key. SOLUTION: A multifunction MF key 10 placed on an operating panel of the portable telephone set can be operated in four directions, upper/lower/left/ right directions. Captions 20-1-20-8 indicate an optimum layout of function keys of the portable telephone set operated, in relation to the operation of the MF key 10. Figures shown in circles pointed out by the optimum layout positions 20-1-20-8 of the function keys denote ranking of the optimum layout positions 20-1-20-8 of the function keys. the investigation results show that the key operation toward the lower part of the MF key 10, that is the downward operation is the easiest operation, then the key operation toward the upper part of the MF key 10, that is the upward operation is next easiest, and finally the key operation toward the left/right part of the MF key 10, that is the left/right operation follows. Furthermore, the function keys, that are used most frequently among the function keys of the terminal that are used in combination with the MF key 10, are preferably placed from the lower part to the right side of the MF key 10 around the lower right position as the center.
