A device for flattening and cooling a tubular film before it enters the nip of a pair of nip rolls of an apparatus for making tubular films by the "captive bubble" process comprises two main guide plates converging towards the nip and being double-walled to receive a coolant and at least two additional adjustable triangular or trapezoidal guide and cooling plates one on each side of the gap between the main guide plates. The additional plates are adapted to be pivoted or moved bodily into the operative position so that they contact the portion of the tubular film not contacted by the main guide plates and to this end diverge in a direction towards the nip. They are double-walled to receive a coolant. All the guide plates may comprise parallel longitudinal cells extending from one side of the plate to the other side in a direction transverse to that of the travel of the film, the cells alternating with and being connected laterally by single-walled webs, the ends of the separate cells communicating with one another in such a manner as to constitute a continuous sinous path for a coolant. Each of the cells may have the cross-section of a flattened honeycomb cell. |
