PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To substantially reduce waiting time until reading of a succeeding image is started, to reduce a generated heat in a motor driving a read optical system, to realize power saving, and to reduce the cost of the power supply and the drive circuit. SOLUTION: This image reader has an optical unit 3 provided with a line sensor 5, a drive means 6 that drives the optical unit 3 in a subscanning direction, a home position detection means 10 that detects a home position of the optical unit 3 corresponding to a read start position of an original in the subscanning direction, a scanning direction decision means 9 that decides the direction of a succeeding scanning to be in a forward direction or a reverse direction depending on the position of the optical unit 3 at the end of scanning, and a control means 8 that controls the drive means 6 based on the decided scanning direction and a scanning command by a host computer.
