PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it possible to obtain a desired retrieval result even when it is impossible to precisely express a retrieval result. SOLUTION: After reading a program in an RAM (S1), necessary initialization needed for retrieval is performed (S2) and branching processing is performed in accordance with kinds of events (S3). That is, when a query is inputted, the query is displayed (S4) and, when a retrieval key is clicked on and the query is inputted, query retrieval processing is executed (S5). When the query is not inputted, a specific picture is selected and similar retrieval processing is performed; when the specific picture is clicked on by event generation, the similar retrieval is also performed (S9). The similar retrieval is performed by calculating a degree of similarity of the specific picture to plural picture data stored in the RAM and the retrieval result is displayed on a display screen on the basis of the degree of similarity.
