PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for suitably compressing a digital image provided with both of a saturated text and/or a line art and an image including a picture. SOLUTION: A block analyzer 30 analyzes the block of an inputted image to decide whether or not there is the combination of all of the saturated text and/or the line art, the image including a picture another-type image data or the combination of some of them to assign the block to one of plural categories according to it. Then, based on the category, the digital image is compressed by a first prescribed compressing method in the case of including the block of the saturated text or the line art, the image including a picture is compressed according to a second prescribed method and the block of the image of another type is compressed according to another prescribed method. An image category is carried to a decoder to be used for decoding processing.
