PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress the level variation of black data of each line unit on a picture while keeping real time property. SOLUTION: This reader is provided with a photoelectric converter 1 optically reading an original picture to output a picture signal and a black shading part 15 correcting black data at the time of reading the original picture by reference level data of black data detected by reading a light shield part, which is formed at a part of the converter 1 at the time of starting reading of the original picture, by each line. The corrected value of black data is obtained by arithmetic processing using reference level data of black data detected at the time of reading a first line to reference level data of black data detected at the time of starting reading of a present line.
