PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical recording method capable of avoiding the deterioration of an optical recording medium in recording information on the optical recording medium through irradiation of recording light. SOLUTION: This is an optical recording method for recording information through the irradiation of recording light which is modulated to the binary of at least a low power level PL and a high power level PH, the method is provided with a procedure 1 which as test recording, records reference information in a prescribed area of an optical recording medium, a procedure 2 which obtains a reproducing signal of the reference information from the prescribed area of the medium and a procedure 3 which decides the power levels PL1, PH1 of the recording light at a normal recording time by carrying out the procedures 1, 2 by varying the power levels PL, PH of the recording light into various values. In this method, in the case of varying the power level of the recording light by the procedure 3, as the PL value is large, the ratio of the PH value to the PL value is set smaller.
