Determined sulfur-loading of the catalyst (24) is compared with a predetermined first limit of maximum emission, and/or an on-board diagnostic check of nitrogen oxide (NOx) storage catalyst activity. In a third stage, should the threshold be exceeded, or should an irregularity of activity be detected, de-sulfating permissibility is determined through examination of in-specification operation of reliability-critical components, and/or through checking of the current operational state, whilst keeping to set running parameters. An Independent claim is included for a common rail diesel motor in which a throttle valve (14) is located ahead of the inlet manifold, and a gas purification unit comprising NOx storage catalyst (24) having leading and trailing temperature sensing (28, 30) and/or a leading, wide-range lambda sensor (26) pre-connected. Additionally or alternatively, an NOx storage sensor (38) follows the catalyst. Preferred Features: It is examined whether, through observation of predetermined de-sulfation parameters, de-sulfation is permissible, if appropriate adjusting de-sulfation parameters. De-sulfation is initiated if permissible, otherwise the third stage is started and/or, if appropriate, detection of malfunction of a component relevant to reliability is indicated. De-sulfation is carried out to a predetermined degree. Normal operational conditions are re-established. Reversion to the start, or to prior interruption of de-sulfation takes place in the event that current results for permissibility of the third stage require it; with return to the start or to the third stage and/or if appropriate signaling a detected malfunction of a reliability-critical component. Adjustment of the required de-sulfation parameters only takes place following expiry of a predetermined interval and/or on exceeding at least one second threshold for sulfur loading. |
