The apparatus absorbs particulate matter contained in e.g. diesel exhaust gases passing through a resonant pipe (1) which has a sound source (2) generating a standing pressure wave. The standing wave captures particles as these pass along the pipe, discharging to a discharge system (6,7) comprising several parallel pipes (6). The collected particles are returned to the combustion source.
