The present invention provides methods for assessing cardiovascular status i n an individual, which comprise determining the sequence at one or more polymorphic positions within the human genes encoding ACE, AT1, AGT, renin, aldosterone synthase, type-2 angiotensin II receptor, endothelin receptor, a nd .beta.-adrenoceptor. The invention also provides isolated nucleic acids encoding polymorphisms in genes encoding ACE, AT1, AGT, renin, aldosterone synthase, type-2 angiotensin II receptor, endothelin receptor and .beta.- adrenoceptor, nucleic acid probes that hybridized to polymorphic positions, kits for the prediction of cardiovascular status, and nucleic acid and pepti de targets for use in identifying candidate cardiovascular drugs.
