Ethylene, propylene and the butenes are dimerized or codimerized by contacting feed olefine(s) with a catalyst comprising metallic sodium dispersed on an anhydrous potassium compound, the catalyst having been pretreated with hydrogen at 50 DEG to 350 DEG C. In examples, propylene yields 4-methyl pentenes-1 and 2, 2-methyl pentene-1, hexenes-1, -2 and -3 and 2-methyl pentene-2.ALSO:Polymerisation catalysts comprising a dispersion of metallic Na on an anlydeous potassium compound are pretreated before use with hydrogen at 50 to 350 DEG C. Preferred as anlydrous K compound is K2CO3 but also mentioned are K2SO4, K2SiO3 and KCl. The Na may be mounted on 1/8 th inch pellets of K2CO3. |
