A method for regulating coolant flow rate to a heat exchanger in an automotive vehicle having an engine operating at different speeds comprising the steps of: providing a main fluid pump (14) for providing a source of fluid under pressure to the engine and the heat exchanger; providing a reversible flow auxiliary pump (20) disposed between the main fluid pump (14) and the heat exchanger (16); measuring engine speed and generating an engine speed signal; measuring ambient temperature and generating an ambient temperature signal; and activating the auxiliary pump (20) to force fluid against the flow from said main fluid pump (14) when the engine speed signal is greater than a threshold value. <IMAGE>
