PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To coat by allowing a web to travel at a high speed even in the case of the web having small surface roughness and to obviate the occurrence of rubbing flaws in the web during coating. SOLUTION: At the time of coating start of the coating applicator when a rod 14 stops rotating or at the time of coating restart when the rotating speed of the rod 14 is smaller than the traveling speed of the web 12, the rod 14 is forcibly rotated and after its rotating speed is raised to >=10% of the traveling speed of the web 12, the rod 14 is brought into contact with the web 12. The forcible rotating force is released after the contact and the rod 14 is driven to be rotated by contact with the web 12.
