PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lathe capable of shortening the depth dimensions necessary for installation while it has a Y axis function. SOLUTION: The lathe is provided with a base 1, a headstock 2 installed on the base 1, an inclined feed base 3, and a tool supporting device 4 to which a turret 6 is installed. The inclined feed base 3 has an inclined guide 3a on its upper face, and advances and retracts on the base 1 relative to the headstock 2. The tool supporting device 4 is installed to the inclined guide 3a of the inclined feed base 3 so that it can freely advance and retract, and performs advancing and retracting motion in the direction X of cut depth of a tool 7. The movement of the tool 7 in Y-axis direction is a resultant motion resulting from the advance and retract of the inclined feed base 3 and the advance and retract of the tool supporting device 4.
