PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the mass transfer capacity of a distillation column having a packing by minimizing or eliminating the bypass vapor of the column. SOLUTION: A heat and/or mass exchange apparatus between a liquid flow and a vapor flow includes a cylindrical column part having an inner wall and the plug of the packing arranged in the column part. The plug of the packing has the outer surface 28 separated from the inner wall 26 of the column part. The apparatus also includes a suppressing means 22 minimizing the vapor flow of the space between the inner wall of the column part and the outer surface of the plug of the packing.
