S-methylmercaptoethyl thiophosphoric acid dimethyl ester is obtained (a) by reacting dimethylthiophosphoric acid chloride with sodium nitrophenolate followed by reaction with monothioglycol-S-methyl ether in the presence of a concentrated solution of NaOH at a temperature of up to 30 DEG C.; or (b) by reacting phosphorus sulphochloride with a substantially equimolar amount of sodium nitrophenolate, reacting the resulting mixture with methanolic sodium hydroxide solution and then further reacting with monothioglycol-S-methyl ether in the presence of a concentrated solution of NaOH at a temperature up to 30 DEG C. The sodium hydroxide concentration is suitably 50% and the process can be carried out continuously by successive addition of the reaction components to a circulatory system containing sodium nitrophenolate, e.g. in the form of a slurry in chlorobenzene. |
