PURPOSE: An apparatus and method for switching a mode of an equalizer is provided to simplify a design for a system by adequately switching a mode of an equalizer using a distribution of an output signal and a QAM signal according to a simple algorithm and a configuration in hardware. CONSTITUTION: A IZnIP operation unit(21) calculates the pth power of an absolute value of Zn outputted from an adaptive equalizer(10). An adder adds -Rp value to the output of the IZnIP calculation unit(21). A square device(22) squares the output of the adder. A mean value calculation unit(23) calculates a mean value of the output of the square device(22), and outputs the value as a dispersion value. A comparator(24) compares the dispersion value outputted from the mean value calculation unit(23) with a reference value and outputs a mode switching signal.
