PURPOSE: A device for inputting/outputting characters in a key phone system with the decreased number of buttons is provided to reduce the number of buttons requested for inputting characters in a character input/output unit of the key phone system. And the device enables the input/output of Korean alphabet as well as English alphabet and number with the decreased number of buttons. CONSTITUTION: A key matrix(240) has at least three buttons. The first button displays an initial consonant of a Korean syllable. The second button displays a vowel of a Korean syllable. The third button displays a final consonant of a Korean syllable. A font ROM(260) has at least three areas. The first area stores font data for the initial consonant of a Korean syllable. The second area stores font data for the vowel of a Korean syllable. The third area stores font data for the final consonant of a Korean syllable. An LCD(Liquid Crystal Display,250) is for display. A microcomputer(230) reads font data in a corresponding area of the font ROM(260) corresponding to a pressed button, if one button on the key matrix(240) is pressed, to display the read font data on the LCD(250). And the microcomputer(230) extracts font data corresponding to a Korean character selected in the LCD(250) from the font ROM(260), to display the extracted font data on the LCD(250).
