A liquid crystal medium for IPS-mode electro-optic liquid crystal displays which is free from image persistence and is suitable for attaining a relatively low threshold voltage and a short response time and which contains 5 to 30 wt.% of a first component represented by general formula (I) and 5 to 50 wt.% of a second component represented by general formula (II): wherein R<1> and R<2> are each C1-C10 alkyl, alkoxy, oxalkyl containing 1 to 4 oxygen atoms or C2-C10 alkenyl; X is trans-cyclohexylene or phenylene; A is -CO-O- or a single bond; and Y<1> is hydrogen or fluoro.
